How Did He Come To The Spotlight?
Weird Al received his first exposure via southern California and syndicated comedy radio personality Dr Demento’s radio show. In 1976, the former gave the latter a homemade tape of original and parody songs performed on the accordion in his bedroom while Demento spoke at Yankovic’s school.
The first song entitled Belvedere Cruisin was played on Demento’s comedy radio show launching Alfred’s career. During his sophomore year, while he was an architecture student at Cal Poly, he became a disc jockey at KCPR.
In 1978, Alfred released his first recording Take Me Down on the LP, Slow Grown as a benefit for the Economic Opportunity Commission of San Luis Obispo County.
Yankovic made his breakthrough from the song “Another One Rides the Bus” which was a parody of Queen’s hit song Another One Bites the Dust. The song became so popular that Alfred’s first TV appearance was the song on The Tomorrow Show.
In 1981, Alfred toured for the first time as a part of Dr Demento’s stage show. His stage act in a Phoenix, Arizona nightclub caught the eye of manager Jay Levey. He then partnered with Levey and formed a band with Steve Jay as a bassist, Jim West as the guitarist, and Jon Schwartz as the drummer.
On 31st March 1982, they performed for the first as a band. In 1983, Alfred released his debut self-titled album on Scotti Bros. The album consists of songs like Ricky, Another One Rides the Bus, and I Love Rocky Road.
