After debuting in a minor role in Live-In in 1986, Thiessen kicked off her TV career. The same year she also got the role that would define her whole career in the future, Kelly Kapowski in Saved by the Bell. She got the role in 1989 and played it until 1993.

In 1990, she appeared in minor roles on 3 TV shows, Charles in Charge, The Hogan Family, and Married... with Children (starring Amanda Bearse).

Then in 1992, Step by Step featured her on an episode titled Daddy's Girl. The same year she appeared on The Powers That Be, A Killer Among Friends and a TV movie called Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style.

Tragically, one of her former boyfriends, David Strickland, killed himself in 1999 deeply affecting Thiessen.
