Serj Tankian is an Armenian-American singer, songwriter, musician, and political activist known perhaps most famously as the frontman for the heavy metal band, System of a Down.

Besides System of a Down, Serj has also had a prolific solo career and collaborations with some of the most esteemed musicians.

Widely considered one of the greatest frontmen in heavy metal, his vocal range spans 4.2 octaves and is held in the same reverence as other great hard-rock and heavy-metal vocalists: the likes of Jim Morrison, Freddie Mercury, Chris Cornell, and Steven Tyler, to name a few.

What Is The Net Worth Of, Serj Tankian?

As of March 2020, Serj Tankian's net worth remains an impressive $20 million.

Serj has been a musician in some form or fashion since 1992. That was the year when Serj formed the band Soil with his future bandmate, Daron Malakian, during their time together at the Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School in Los Angeles, California.

The band was short-lived, but the friendship Serj and Daron formed would carry them through the beginnings of their new band, System of a Down. Together with Shavo Odadjian on the rhythm guitar and Ontronik "Andy" Khachaturian on the drums, System of a Down made the rounds of the local bars and started work on demo records that didn't see the light of day until recently.

All four of his grandparents had been survivors of the Armenian Genocide, and the horrors of that would stay with him for eternity, influencing the lyrics and themes of System of Down songs: the band deals with themes like overpopulation, genocide, climate change, and the prison system.

Serj is a firm believer in the equality of opportunity, human rights, and social justice. He co-founded the organization, the Axis of Justice with fellow musician Tom Morello, of Audioslave and Rage Against the Machine fame. The non-profit organization uses music as a binding tool to bring about interpersonal and social reform.

Serj is also an environmentalist and an animal welfare activist.

Early Life, Childhood, And Education

Serj Tankian was born on August 21, 1967, in Beirut, Lebanon. Born to Khatchadour Tankian -- who had been a singer/musician in his own right -- and his wife, Alice Tankian, his family moved to Los Angeles, California, when Serj was 7.

Serj attended the local Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School, where he would meet his future System of a Down bandmates Daron Malakian and Shavo Odadjian. Upon graduation, he enrolled at California State University, Northridge.

Serj's views on religion stem from ancient and spiritual doctrines. In an interview, he spoke of his religious views, stating:

"[I have] the same religion as that tree over there. It's a mix of Native American, Buddhist and transcendental ideas. I like to think of earth as mother. I like to think of sky as grandfather. God has been used for ulterior motives."

In another interview, he said:

"I believe very firmly that indigenous populations had a really good, intuitive understanding of why we're here. And we're trying to gain that same understanding through psychology and intellect in modern civilization."

Marriage And Children

Serj married his longtime girlfriend, Angela Madatyan, on June 9, 2012. They exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony in Simi Valley, California, in the presence of friends and family.
