Roy Clark was born Roy Linwood Clark on April 15, 1933, in Meherrin, Virginia, United States. He was born to tobacco farmer Hester Linwood Clark and Lillian Clark. He has four siblings. 

He belonged to American nationality. He grew up in Meherrin and New York City. When he was 11, his family moved to Washington Highlands near Washington D.C. His father taught him to play guitar when he was 14.

He loved playing musical instruments like banjo, mandolin, and guitar. He twice won National Banjo Championship in 1947 and 1948. As for his education, there is no information available.

Roy Clark married a woman called Barbara Joyce Rupard on August 31, 1957. Roy and Barbara were the parents of four sons; Terry Lee Meyer, Roy Clark II, Dr. Michael Meyer, and Diane Stewart, and a daughter Susan Mosier.
