He grew up alongside his siblings Sherry Joanne Harrison (died at the age of 6), Joseph Kent Harrison, and Christopher K. Harrison in San Diego. He went to Taft Middle School in San Diego, California.

In April 1981, his family relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada, after his parent’s real estate business collapsed. He later dropped out of high school to pursue his $2,000-a-week business of selling fake Gucci bags.He was just a 13 years old teen at the time.

In 1981, Rick’s father opened a 300-square-foot secondhand store called the Gold & Silver Coin Shop in Las Vegas Boulevard South. He worked in the store in the daytime while repossessing cars at night.

The father-son duo earned their pawn shop license in 1989 and opened the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop less than two miles from the Las Vegas Strip. By 2005, they were loaning out about $3 million annually with $700,000 in interest income.

By 2006, the shop developed a reputation for carrying special sports items with unique histories. They even had a 2001 New England Patriots Super Bowl ring that belongs to football cornerback Brock Williams.

As of 2010, the items most often brought into the store were jewelry. Their shop inventory has a ratio of 5,000 items pawned per 12,000.

In 2009, Harrison began appearing in a reality show based in a Las Vegas pawn shop, which was originally pitched to HBO. The format was later changed by Nancy Dubuc of the History Channel, including on-camera experts appraising the items brought into the Gold & Silver as well as the personality dynamics of the store’s staff.

The program was renamed to Pawn Stars for more marketing appeal. In January 2011, the show became the highest-rated program on the History Channel and the second-highest rates reality show behind reality television series Jersey Shore.

As of 2020, the show is in its 15th season, with 44 minutes of running time. The show also stars Richard Harrison, also known as Old Man (died in 2018), Corey Harrison, and Austin Russell.

Philanthropic Works  

The 55-year-old media personality serves at the Epilepsy Foundation’s National Board of Directors. On 5th October 2014, he led motorcycle riders across the Las Vegas to raise funds and awareness for the foundations.
