Richard Morgan Fliehr is an American professional wrestling manager and retired professional wrestler who is widely known as Ric Flair amongst his fans. He is currently signed to WWE under its Legend program.  

Flair reportedly had a wrestling career that spanned 40 years and is noted for his tenures with World Championship Wrestling (WCW), Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP), the Wrestling Federation (WWF later WWE) and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). The 71-year-old retired wrestler has claimed to be a 21-time champion during his career.

Flair reportedly made $508,000 as his salary from WWE in 2006. He earns his wealth from his successful career as a wrestling manager. Besides, he also pockets a decent sum of money from his endorsements and sponsorships.

As per various sources, a wrestler earns $47,000 to $101,149 annually, whereas, a wrestling manager makes $108,721 to $114,008 per year.

Similarly, back in 2011, his monthly salary from TNA was around $22,000. 

Short Career Highlight

Following his graduation from the University of Minnesota, he trained as a professional wrestler with Verne Gagne. He attended Gagne’s first wrestling camp with Jim Brunzell, Greg Gagne, The Iron Sheik, and Ken Patera at Gagne’s barn outside in the winter of 1971.

He first competed in Japan in 1973 for International Wrestling Enterprise. He defended the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in All Japan against the likes of Genichiro Tenryu, Riki Choshu, Kerry Von Erich, Harley Race, and Jumbo Tsuruta.

In 1974, he left AWA for Jim Crockett’s Mid-Atlantic region in the National Wrestling Alliance and shortly afterward captured his first singles title beating Paul Jones for the Mid-Atlantic TV Championship.

On 17th September 1981, he beat Dusty Rhodes for his first NWA World Heavyweight Championship. In late 1985, he teamed up with Arn Anderson, Ole Anderson, Tully Blanchard and formed a group calling themselves The Four Horsemen.

In August 1991, he signed with the World Wrestling Federation and began appearing on television with the Big Gold Belt. He made his last appearance in WWF on 10th February 1993 before returning to WCW.

He returned to WCW in February 1993 and hosted a short-lived talk show called A Flair for the Gold. Following his return, he briefly held the NWA World Heavyweight Championship for a tenth time defeating Barry Windham.

On 29th April 1995, he wrestled with Antonio Inoki in the presence of 190,000 spectators in Pyongyang, North Korea. The event was also broadcast on 4th August 1995 on pay-per-view under the title of Collision in Korea.

On 21st November 2009, Ric returned to the ring as a villain on the “Hulkamania: Let The Battle Begin” losing to Hulk Hogan in the main event. He also lost two matched against Hulk on tour.

In 2013 and 2014, he occasionally appeared on NXT, accompanying his daughter Charlotte to the ring. On 28th April 2014, he appeared in an episode of Raw alongside the reunited Evolution and The Shield.

During the July 22 Raw Reunion episode, Flair raised a toast alongside Triple H, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Hulk Hogan, and several other fellow wrestlers of his era.

Financial Problems And Unpaid Taxes

The 71-year-old wrestler had a few run-ins with the IRS dating back to the early 1990s. In 2000, the IRS stated that he had over $870,000 worth of unpaid taxes.

In 2019, as per the legal filings released, he reportedly failed to pay his full tax amounts for his earnings between 2016 and 2018. He was reported to owe $240,000 to the Federal government and $40,000 to the state of Georgia.

Additional Fact: In 2019, Ric underwent a heart surgery, which left him with a $1.8 million medical bill (not covered by insurance).

Richard Morgan Fliehr was born on 25ht February 1949 in Memphis, Tennessee, the United States of America. He was adopted by Dr. Richard Reid Fliehr and Kathleen Fliehr.

He went to Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, where he participated in interscholastic wrestling, football, and track. He then enrolled at the University of Minnesota.

He married his fourth wife Jacqueline Beems on 11th November 2009 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and got divorced on 1st February 2014. Likewise, Richard tied the knot with his third wife, Tiffany VanDemark, on 27th May 2006 and divorced in 2009.

Flair wed his second wife, Elizabeth Harrell, on 27 August 1983 and shared two children Ashley and Reid. Their divorce was finalized in 2006 after 23  years of marriage.

He married his first wife, Leslie Goodman, on 28th August 1971. While together, they shared two children: Megan and David (semi-retired professional wrestler). They got divorced after twelve years of marriage on 18th July 1983.
