Car Giveaways: A Heartfelt Deed Or A Stunt
It was Winfrey who originally began the craze of giving away costly free gifts to audience members, particularly the individuals who had experienced troublesome circumstances.
Back in 2004, the talk show host flabbergasted audience members of her TV show by giving all 276 of them a new Pontiac G6 sedan worth around $28 thousand at the time.
One of the media experts named the give away as one of the greatest promotional stunts in the history of television.
Oprah Winfrey exclaimed, “Everybody gets a car!” [And a tax bill]. It started with a big bash, she gave a brand-new Pontiac G-6 sedan pointing to a woman - You Get A Car!!!
Later in the interview, it was disclosed that Winfrey told her producers to fill the crowd with desperately car needy people.
Well, the car actually wasn't a gift at all, although it felt like the best gift for someone. First thing, those cars were donated by Pontic themselves as the hefty price for the advertisement. Moreover, the company paid the state sales tax for all 276 cars.
One car winner said, “It’s not really a free car. It’s more of a 75 percent-off car. Of course, that’s still not such a bad deal.”
He added, Federal and state income taxes added up to about $6,000 for most of us, the winners.
Similarly, in the 2010 giveaway of the then-unreleased 2012 VW Beetle, the show said it would pay the taxes this time around.
As of now, the same trend has been followed by her successor and regarded as another queen of the daytime TV talk shows, Ellen DeGeneres.
