Fillion was raised in Edmonton’s Mill Woods neighborhood and enrolled at Holy Trinity Catholic High School from where he completed his secondary and post-secondary education. He then went to the University College of Alberta and the University of Alberta where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Society.

Nathan began his acting career from theatre, television, and film productions including Theatresports with Rapid Fire Theatre. In 1994, he moved to New York City and acted as Joey Buchanan in the soap opera One Life to Live.

He then appeared in the sitcom Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place and as James Frederick in Saving Private Ryan alongside Tom Hanks, Edward Burns, and Matt Damon.

Fillion made his breakthrough in 2002 as Captain Malcolm Reynolds in the sci-fi television series Firefly. He appeared in the show from 2002 to 2003 alongside Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin, and Jewel Staite.
