Michelle made her acting debut in 1989 in Rude Awakening with a minor role of Student on street. She then performed in the play The Constant Couple the following year.

She made her Broadway debut in 1996 from Getting Away with Murder. Some of her other theatre credits are Othello, Hamlet, A.M.L., The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Hurd won the California Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for the premiere of The Violet Hour by Richard Greenberg.

In 1997, Michelle made her television debut as the comic book superhero B.B. DaCosta/Fire in the failed TV pilot Justice League of America. Some of her other early TV credits are New York Undercover, The Cosby Mysteries, and The Practice.

Hurd caught the attention of Law & Order producer Dick Wolf from her performance as a corrupt FBI informant. Two years later, Wolf featured Hurd in the spin-off Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as Detective Monique Jeffries.

She then appeared in TV shows like Charmed, The O.C., According to Jim, Shark, Gossip Girl, and Bones. From 2006 to 2007, she had a recurring role as news producer Courtney Brown in an American medical drama ER alongside Anthony Edwards, George Clooney, Noah Wyle, and Sherry Stringfield.
