At the time of her birth, both her parents were serving time at a federal prison after a drug bust implicated them in the illegal smuggling of marijuana from Jamaica to the US.
Constance was allowed time out of her sentence to give birth and care for Leighton for three months before serving the rest of her sentence. Leighton's paternal grandparents took over her care and she grew up in Marco Island, Florida.
