Smith was born out of wedlock to a Minnesota-based rock and roll musician and a fan of his. Due to the illicit nature of his conception, his birth mother gave him up for adoption.

He was adopted by the Smith family, Max and Elaine Smith, and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He legally adopted the name "Kevin Max" in 1997 as an homage to his adoptive father.

He studied at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he would meet his future dc Talk bandmates Toby "tobyMac" McKeehan and Michael Tait.
