Kenny Mayne started his career as a reporter for the Las Vegas, Nevada-based TV station, KLVX-TV (an affiliate of PBS). He had a long spell at the Seattle, Washington-based KSTW-TV from 1982 to 1989, during which, he was a production assistant, news writer, weekend sports anchor, and weekday news reporter.

Mayne joined ESPN in 1994 and began working as the anchor for ESPN2's SportSmash, and a feature reporter for SportsNight. 

He started getting prominent screen time and beginning in September 1995, he hosted ESPN2's weekend motorsports news and highlights show, RPM 2day and RPM 2night; and occasionally hosted the 11 p.m. SportsCenter.

He left SportsCenter to host a myriad of shows for ESPN, including the quiz and trivia game show, 2 Minute Drill. He also hosted ESPN's coverage on horse-racing and had a weekly segment on the Sunday NFL Countdown, called The Mayne Event.

From 2008 to 2011, Mayne also produced and starred in the scripted web series, Mayne Street, which was a fictional retelling of Mayne's adventures at ESPN

After Mayne Street was discontinued, Mayne hosted Kenny Mayne’s Wider World of Sports, a show wherein Mayne traveled to exotic locations and covered unique sports.

He returned to SportsCenter on October 15, 2013, after his contract stipulated him, effectively ending his other obligations.

Besides his reporting gig at ESPN, Mayne has been somewhat of a celebrity for his dry sense of humor and oddball attitude. 

He was one of the contestants of the second season of the ABC dance reality show, Dancing with the Stars, but was the first to be eliminated. 

He was also seen in TV shows like Brockmire and played himself in the 1998 movie, BASEketball; and voiced himself in the 2010 animated movie, Kung-Fu Magoo, featuring Dylan and Cole Sprouse.

Mayne has also authored a book, An Incomplete And Inaccurate History Of Sport, published in 2008.
