He studied at the Northwood Hollywood High School from where he graduated in 1950 and then enrolled at the University of California. He attended private music lessons with Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.
John studied for a single semester at the Los Angeles City College as the institution had a Studio Jazz Band.
