Jeff’s career started in Kenya with Kenya Television Network. He then worked for a few small networks before getting a job at ABC News. Then he got a job at Reuters where he worked as their chief producer for Africa from 1999 to 2001. After this, he started working at NBC News in 1994.

His career at CNN started in 2001, and he started covering crisis and wars all over Africa. He reported on some of the most violent wars in Africa. In fact, his reporting was so vigorous that the Nigerian government punished him for reporting the ongoing events.

Additionally, he also reported on Hurricane Katrina and the Iraq war. He also worked as a correspondent for them for international events. CNN officially announced his departure from the network on 29 May 2007.

After working with CNN, he then worked for another Kenyan network called K24. He also released a biography titled Through my African eyes.

Koinange is married to Shaila Koinange as of February 2020; they have a son named Jamal Mbiyu Koinange. They tied the knot in 1998. Before this, he was married to a girl named Sonya. The duo separated in 1994.
