Israel Folau, a former Australian rugby player used to play for New South Wales Waratahs in Super Rugby (2013-2019). He was one of the highest-paid rugby players until the controversial statements on same-sex marriage got his contract terminated.

The main source of his income was rugby career until his contract with New South Wales Waratahs was terminated. Back in 2018 Season, Folau became the highest-paid rugby player with the salary of £1.14 million per season. 

Currently, the highest-paid is Kobelco Steelers' Dan Carter (£1.15 million per season) followed by Matt Giteau of Suntory Sungoliath (£1.1 million per season) and Charles Piutau of Bristol Bears ( £1 million per season).

Fight Against Unrightful Contract Termination

After Israel Folau's contract with Waratahs was terminated by Rugby Australia in early 2019, he is seeking justice for wrongful contract termination citing Section772 of the Fair Work Act.

As per Folau's lawyers, he is seeking for the $7 million (Aud $10 million) in damages. The further report is yet to be out.

Well, the contract termination issue came up following Israel's bad comments on the legalization of same-sex marriage and provocative posts. 

And later in May 2019, Rugby Australia terminated his deal with rugby union's New South Wales Waratahs citing breach of the code of conduct of Rugby Australia.

Dispute On GoFundMe Campaign

Despite a property empire of $7 million, Israel launched GoFundMe campaign in mid-June 2019 with an aim to raise $3 million for a legal battle but was later stopped citing the violation of GoFundMe's terms of service and massive criticisms.

Later, in its response, the Australian Christian Lobby reportedly made a donation announcement of $100,000 on June 25, 2019, and even more, raised $2 million in the campaign to support Israel unless were stopped by ACL with Folau's consent.

As a famous rugby figure, Israel Folau has got approaches with many endorsements; he was offered deals by Adidas and Powerade in 2009 and also signed with Goodman Fielder in 2013.

Even though the value of the sponsorship deal is not out, it allegedly earned him hundreds of thousand dollars.

However, after he got in controversy with provocative statements over same-sex marriage, he lost many of his endorsement deals including sponsorship with ASICS.
