Heath Ledger was an Australian actor who is most known for his portrayal of Joker in Christopher Nolan’s take on Batman titled The Dark Night. The actor who died at a young age of 28 left a legacy behind as the pop culture icon, Joker, for which he was awarded a posthumous Academy Award. 

His other appraised works include Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain and the title character on the Australian historical drama Ned Kelly. The actor is often praised for his commitment to a role and method-acting, which turned his performances into a life-like current of events.

He made his debut in the Australian movie Clowning Around in 1992 and never looked back as his career took off and went through the roofs.

Ledger had set his eyes on becoming an actor right after the completion of his high school graduation at a young age of 16. The actor jumped ships from state to state, searching for a job in a movie when he finally found a small role in the movie Clowning Around in 1992.  Later in 1996, he worked in the Australian drama Sweat. He kept himself occupied with minor roles in random television shows before moving to America. 

He was cast in the American fantasy drama Roar (1997) as a recurring character and in the famous Australian television series Home and Away. His career breakthrough came when he scored the role of the lead character in the American teen comedy-drama 10 Things I Hate About You in 1997.

After the success of the teen comedy, the talented actor had a supporting role in The Patriot (2000), which starred Mel Gibson.  He started getting more film offers among which he starred in Monster’s Ball and A Knight’s tale in 2001, The Four Feathers in 2002, The Order and Ned Kelly in 2003, Casanova and The Brothers Grimm, and Lords of Dogtown in 2005.

In 2005, he also starred in Brokeback Mountain as Ennis Del Mar alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, and Michelle Williams. The performance was widely praised by critics for which Ledger was nominated for Best Actor in the 78th Academy Awards and the 63rd Golden Globes Awards.  

Ledger managed to squeeze in four more movies into his resume after Brokeback Mountain. He appeared in I’M Not There, The Dark Night, and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The latter two movies were released after his demise. He starred alongside Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Liam Neeson

Residence: The Tree House

The actor purchased the house of Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, located in Woodrow Wilson Street, California, in 2005. The residence, which was nicknamed Tree House, was a 1,861 square foot home surrounded by sycamore trees and extended into 2,500 square foot exterior living space, including a movie lounge, a dining and BBQ place, and seating space all over the property.

Relationships

The late actor dated Lisa Zane briefly from 1997 to 1998. The two met on a set of some production and shaped their work relationship into a love affair.                  

Late in 2002, the method-actor met Naomi Watts on the set of the Australian movie Ned Kelly. The couple dated until 2004 and split, remaining good friends until the demise of Ledger.

Ledger’s most significant relationship came with Michelle Williams. The co-actors of the Brokeback Mountain realized the chemistry they had with each other and began dating in 2004.

They lived in the Tree House with their daughter Matilda Ledger. In 2007, Ledger and Williams confirmed the end of their relationship.     

Personal Life

Heath Andrew Ledger was born to Sally Ledger, a French teacher, and Kim Ledger, a racing car driver and mining engineer on 4 April 1979 in Perth, Australia.

He graduated high school from Guildford Grammar School at the age of 16 and didn’t pursue further education.  Ledger was a chess enthusiast joining different chess tournaments when he was young.

After the release of The Dark Knight, he became a popular icon with his lines from movies being quoted all over. Bon Iver’s song Perth is said to be inspired by Heath Ledger.

Death

In 2007, in an interview with the New York Times, the pop culture icon Ledger stated he had paranoia and anxiety issues after working on The Dark Knight, and I’m Not There. This threw Ledger into a drug addiction, which eventually led him to his grave.

Ledger was found dead on his bed by his housekeeper on 22 January 2008. The medical responder tried to revive Ledger with CPR, but all went in Vain, declaring the actor dead around at 3:33 pm. The autopsy and toxicology report declared the cause of death as Acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine

He was survived by his daughter Matilda Ledger.
