Eliud Kipchoge is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes in the marathon. Considered to be the best marathon-runner of his generation, he set the world record for completing the marathon at the 2018 Marathon.

Kipchoge started training professionally to become a runner at 16 under the tutelage of former Olympian, Patrick Sang. 

His first professional run came at the junior leg of the 2002 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, where he finished fifth in the individual race, but helped the national team win gold.

The following year, he had his first taste of individual gold when he won the junior race at the IAAF Championships. As a senior, he won his 5000 meters championship at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics, setting a world record in the process.

To date, he has been a finalist in 5 such tournaments and won silver accolades at the 2007 World Championships, 2008 Summer Olympics, and the 2010 Commonwealth Games.     

In his half-marathon debut, Kipchoge set the second-best debut time, clocking in at 59:25. When he made his marathon debut at the 2013 Hamburg Marathon, he not only won the overall race but set the course record.

He has also won the World Marathon Major on five occasions: 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Additionally, he has won the London Marathon four times -- a record in itself, and the 2016 Olympic marathon. 

Kipchoge currently holds the record for the fastest time in a marathon, clocking in at 2:01:39 -- a record that he set in the 2018 Berlin Marathon on September 16, 2018.

Eliud Kipchoge was born on November 5, 1984, in Kapsisiywa, in the Nandi County of Kenya. Kipchoge is the youngest of four children ad was raised by a single mother -- his father long gone from his life.

Kipchoge attended Kaptel Secondary School and graduated in 1999. He had to traverse two miles (3.2 km) just to get to school every day -- but at this point, running was just a necessity, not his passion.

He started training to become a trainer when he turned 16 and former-Olympic-runner-turned-coach, Patrick Sang, took him under his wing.
