Edward Allen Harris was born on 28th November 1950 in Englewood, New Jersey, the United States of America to Margaret Sholl and Robert L. Harris. He has mixed ethnic descent and is an American as per his nationality. 

He went and graduated from Tenafly High School. He later enrolled at the University of Oklahoma from where he studied drama. Moreover, he acquired his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts in 1975.
