Doris Kearns Goodwin, 78, is an American biographer, historian, former sports journalist and political commentator who has written biographies of several U.S. presidents including Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream: The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys: An American Saga: Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, and The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt.

She grew up in Rockville Centre, New York along with Jene Kearns and went to South Side High School. She enrolled at Colby College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964. 

She earned her Ph.D. in government from Harvard University in 1968 with a thesis titled “Prayer and Reapportionment: An Analysis of the Relationship between the Congress and the Court.”

In 1979, she became the first female journalist to enter the Boston Red Sox locker room. She also consulted on an appeared in Ken Burn’s 1994 documentary Baseball.

For her book about the American Civil War and Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, she won the 2005 Lincoln Prize. 

Also Know: Kearns was a member of the board of directors for Northwest Airlines. 

In 2014, she won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction for The Bully Pulpit. The book was also a Los Angeles Times Book Prize finalist and a Christian Science Monitor 15 best nonfiction books.
