David Muir was born David Jason Muir on November 8, 1973, in Syracuse, New York, U.S. to Pat Mills and Ronald Muir. He has a sister named Rebecca Muir. He watched ABC news while growing up, which later fueled his love for journalism.

Muir went to Onondaga Central Junior-Senior High School and graduated in May 1991. Then he joined Park School of Communications at Ithaca College. He got his Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism in May 1995.

There have been numerous rumors that Muir is gay; in fact, the reporter has been linked to other male colleagues several times. The rumors have not been confirmed or denied.
