Legendary American hard-rock band, Van Halen, is credited with spearheading a movement that rejuvenated the hard-rock scene, and as the frontman, David Lee Roth is credited with providing a voice to the movement.
One of the most ubiquitous names in the annals of hard-rock, David Lee Roth, had two stints with the band, propelling the band to the heights of mainstream popularity both times. His solo career was also the stuff of rock legend, and anyone who's worth a dime in the rock scene has collaborated with Lee Roth over the years.
The living embodiment of the saying that "age is just a number", David Lee Roth, now 65 years old and $60 million richer, is still with the band.
For his contributions to hard-rock and music in general, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of Van Halen in 2007.
What Is David Lee Roth's Net Worth?
David Lee Roth is a multi-millionaire: his longstanding career as Van Halen frontman and an equally prolific solo career saw to that.
As of March 2020, David Lee Roth's net worth is reported to be $60 million.
As with all musicians, his net worth comes from album sales, royalties, and concert buys, and when you have had a career as prolific as Lee Roth that spans nearly half a century, it would be easy to see how he made his prodigious wealth.
Childhood And Early Beginnings
David Lee Roth was born on October 10, 1954, in Bloomington, Indiana. Born into a humble household to an ophthalmologist father and a teacher mother, Roth had no idea what destiny had in store for him.
He was in and out of numerous schools and worked as a hospital orderly when he met the brothers who would change his life: Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen.
First Stint With Van Halen (1974 To 1985)
While studying at Pasadena City College, Roth befriended the musician brothers, Alex and Eddie Van Halen. Roth had been a singer for the group, Red Ball Jets. The Van Halen brothers had themselves been in a band called Mammoth with Eddie Van Halen playing the guitar and singing and Alex playing the drums.
As fate would have it, the two forces collided, and Roth agreed to be the singer for Mammoth. Along with bassist Michael Anthony, the band officially changed their name in 1974 and would henceforth be known as Van Halen.
The Van Halen phenomenon caught on fire, and in 1978, they released their debut album, Van Halen. Despite enjoying widespread success in the ensuing years, a rift was forming between Roth and Eddie on the creative direction of their music.
Roth officially parted ways with the rest of the band on April 1, 1985. They reunited briefly in June 1996 and recorded a couple of songs for their Best Of CD, but their reunion was later proven to be a publicity stunt.
During his departure from Van Halen, Roth continued to do what he did best: make music. He spearheaded an ensemble lineup consisting of guitar virtuoso Steve Vai, bassist Billy Sheehan, and drummer Gregg Bissonette to collaborate on his solo debut LP, Eat 'Em and Smile, released in July 1986.
The album was a critical and commercial success that spawned a career of hit solo albums.
During his prolific solo run, he collaborated with the who's who of musicians and released five additional studio albums to great acclaim and fanfare.
Van Halen Reunion (2007-Present)
Lee Roth joined his former Van Halen band-members on January 24, 2007, for a limited 40-date live tour.
Spurred on by the success of the tour, the band collectively announced on February 2, 2007, that Lee Roth had officially rejoined Van Halen.
They were collectively inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, along with Roth's successor Sammy Hagar.
After many setbacks, Van Halen officially began their reunion tour in September 2007. They toured all over the United States and Canada, earning over $93 million in the process and playing to over a million people.
Throughout their illustrious career, Van Halen has released seven studio albums, notwithstanding the six solo albums by Roth. Their albums have sold many millions of copies worldwide and have been certified platinum multiple times by the RIAA.
Considered one of the pioneers of the sound that is so ubiquitous in the contemporary hard-rock scenes, Van Halen not only resurrected the hard-rock scene from the ground-up, but they also laid the foundation for the thriving rock scene of today.
While their careers are winding down, their legacy is eternal, and the current rock music owes a debt of gratitude to Van Halen for their dedication and virtuosity.
David Lee Roth: Personal Life
Lee Roth has remained a bachelor all his life - never once marrying. That does not, however, mean that he has remained celibate. Quite the contrary, in fact, David Lee Roth perpetuates the stereotype of the quintessential rockstar.
Booze, drugs, and sex were the order of the day for Roth in his prime and bolstered by his Van Halen fanfare, he was linked with some high-profile celebrities.
He was famously in a relationship with the South-African model, Caron Bernstein, from 1991 to 1992.
Apart from that, Roth has been linked with actress Brooke Shields, Sônia Braga, Apollonia Kotero, and Kathy Simmons, to name a few.
Roth has no children as of yet, and considering he is 65 years old, that is unlikely to change.
