Welcome back to another episode of the VS. Series. Today we are going to discuss the longtime soda wars between the two soft drinks producers; The Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo.
It all started back in late 1899 after pharmacist Caleb Bradham created Pepsi-Cola after 13 years of the monopoly saga ran by Coca-Cola. The original recipe for coke was found by John S. Pemberton in 1886.
The two soft drinks companies have been battling each other for more than a century. They both have been providing beverages to the consumers.
Differences Between The Two Colas
According to a survey in 2019, many people said that both of them are the same. But most prefer Coca-Cola over Pepsi for its taste, quality, availability and marketing strategy.
But there is actually a difference between Coca Cola and Pepsi. The difference is so slight that most of the people would not be able to separate in a blind taste test.
The ingredients of Pepsi are; Carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, phosphoric acid, caramel color, sugar, caffeine, citric acid, natural flavors.
The ingredients of Coca Cola are; Carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, phosphoric acid, caramel color, caffeine, natural flavors.
Did you saw the difference? It turns out the only difference between them is that Pepsi contains citric acid while Coca Cola doesn’t. Moreover, there is also a slight difference in the amount of sodium. Coca Cola has more sodium than Pepsi which makes Pepsi tastes sweeter.
In 2005, the difference was pointed out by Malcolm Gladwell in his book Blink. He wrote:
“Pepsi is sweeter than Coke, so right away it had a big advantage in a sip test. Pepsi is also characterized by a citrusy flavor burst, unlike the more raisiny-vanilla taste of Coke. But that burst tends to dissipate over the course of an entire can. Pepsi, in short, is a drink built to shine in a sip test.”
Coca Cola and PepsiCo are among the world’s two biggest food brands and also the legendary brand rivals. The Coca-Cola Company is the 4th top global brand and PepsiCo is the 29th top global brand.
Fun Fact: Actually, Coco-Cola was originally made with the medicinal purpose to cure headache and other illnesses while Pepsi-Cola was made as a drink to help digestion.
As of 2019, Coke has overtaken the market as a soft drinks company but looking from the business view, Pepsi has overtaken the market.
