He went to Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California. He later enrolled at the Paulist Seminary St Peter's College and the University of California, Irvine. 

Bob was married to actress Annie McGreevey and shared a child together. They got married on 6th July 1980 until 31st July 2006. 

He is currently married to Carey Pitts since August 26, 2006.

Gunton received recognition after playing Warden Samuel Norton, the head of Shawshank State Prison in The Shawshank Redemption alongside Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, William Sadler, and Clancy Brown

He then starred in a recreation of the Watergate tapes incident for Nightline. Similarly, in 2004, he appeared as President Woodrow Wilson in the film Iron Jawed Angels
