Both his parents, father Gustavo Adolfo del Toro Bermúdez and mother Fausta Genoveva Sánchez Rivera, were lawyers, and his older brother, Gustavo, is the Chief Medical Officer at the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Raised in a Roman Catholic household, Benicio attended the Roman Catholic school, Academia del Perpetuo Socorro.

To honor his father's wishes, he enrolled in the business program at the University of California, San Diego, but upon finding his calling in drama, he pursued acting at the Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York City.

What was peculiar was that Benicio and Kimberly were not in a relationship, let alone married to each other. Despite that, both parties co-parent to the best of their ability and maintain an amicable relationship; Kimberly even went so far as to say that she wanted another child and wanted Benicio to be the father.
