The 2-time State Champion in wresting while in Arrowhead High School, Ben, wrestled as an amateur for the University of Missouri. In addition to that, he also served as an assistant wrestling coach at Arizona State University.

While in collegiate wrestling, he competed in 174 lbs for 4 years (2004- 2008), recording 153-8, which includes 91 victories by the way of fall. 

After consecutive losses in 2004 & 2005 to Chris Pendleton in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship, the Arizona native later made applaudable consecutive victories in 2006 & 2007.

Following his college career, Ben Askren went to compete in the 2008 Olympics representing the USA- he got a selection to Olympics after defeating national runner-up Tyrone Lewis for 2 consecutive times.

In 74 kg division wrestling at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Ben defeated Hungarian István Veréb via pin in the first round (August 12, 2008). However, he lost to Cuban Ivan Fundora finishing 6th in the competition.

Ben Askren joined MMA in early 2009 and made his debut against Josh Flowers on February 7, held by Headhunter Production, where he turned victorious after a TKO in the first round.

The 2009 FILA 2° World Grappling Champion & gold medalist in grappling, then took interest in Bellator Fighting Championship (Season 2), winning the debut against Ryan Thomas at Bellator 14 (April 15, 2010).

At Bellator 33 (October 21, 2010), he won the Bellator Welterweight World Championship defeating then-reigning champ Lyman Goodman.

Further, Ben defended his Bellator title 4 times: against Jay Hieron (at Bellator 56), Douglas Lima (at Bellator 64), Karl Amoussou (at Bellator 86) and Andrey Koreshkov (at Bellator 97). In November 2013, Askren was released after negotiation & vacated the belt.

Thereafter, the MMA fighter signed with ONE Championship on December 9, 2013, on a 2 year/6 fight contract.

Ben won over Nobutatsu Suzuki at ONE FC 19: Reign of Champions (August 29, 2014) and gained his ONE Welterweight Championship.
