Lloyd Vernet Bridges III was born on December 9, 1941, to actors Lloyd Bridges and Dorothy Bridges in Los Angeles, California. He is the eldest among his siblings, Jeff, Lucinda and Garett who died in infancy.

He was named Beau after a character on the 1936 American novel Gone with the Wind. He adapted this nickname as his screen name being called Beau Bridges. Beau aspired to be a basketball star when he was younger and even played in his freshman year while he studied at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 1959, he joined the United States Coast Guard as a second class officer and served for eight years.

 In 1964, Beau married Julie Landfield after which Landfield gave birth to his two sons Casey Bridges and Jordan Bridges. Bridges and Landfield later divorced in 1984 after 20 years of marriage. Bridges wasted no time in finding another wife, he married Wendy Treece the same year with whom he has three kids, Dylan Bridges, Ezekiel Bridges, and Emily Bridges.

Bridges is a strict Christian and has been practicing veganism since 2004.
