Creator and owner of the popular comedy-sports website Barstool Sports, Dave Portnoy is worth $100 million as of February 2020.          

Although he is a multimillionaire, he is heavily criticized for what people claim to be supporting misogynistic views and toxic masculinity that promotes sexual harassment on his website.

The love-hate aside, Barstool Sports is worth $450 million, and most people credit Portnoy for the revolutionary way in which he covered sports. Additionally, most people know him for his Twitter war with Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, who opposed his anti-union views.

When Did Barstool Sports Start?

Barstool Sports started as print media and would primarily publish content on diverse topics. At first, it was distributed in the Boston area but later expanded its coverage area.   

The company launched a website in 2007, making it available for reading to everyone with an internet connection.

Barstool first started covering gambling and sports but later started making content covering pop culture.

Former owner Dave Portnoy has said that the site is a mix of smut and sports. The site focuses on providing sports content for audiences with humor.      

As of February 2020, the site covers college basketball, golf, college football, gambling, among others, from over five locations, including Boston and New York.  

Why Do People Hate Barstool And Chief Of Content Dave Portnoy?

Portnoy is a polarizing figure for most audiences, some people love him, and others absolutely hate him. The media also has a love-hate relationship with him.

As most of the content is a direct result of his, people have related the seemingly offensive content on the website to the views of Dave Portnoy.    

Most of the complaints are with the website’s tendency to sexualize women and write content in which people find tones of toxic masculinity.     

Additionally, Portnoy also took it upon himself to have a very public Twitter fight with popular Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez.   

The Congresswoman said that Portnoy broke the law by threatening to fire employees if they unionize, and Portnoy replied to the criticism by the progressive lawmaker. After this, supporters of the Congresswoman rallied against Portnoy.

He has also been arrested quite a few times. His arrests from New York and from Super Bowl LIII are especially infamous.      

The entrepreneur has also publicly dissed LeBron James, which makes all the Lakers fans hate him.

Barstool Sports Is A Charitable Organization But Why Do Some People Still Hate It?  

Barstool has been actively charitable ever since its establishment in 2003, They raised $240,000 for the victims of the tragic Boston Marathon Bombings.

Similarly, the site also raised $150,000 to an officer who was killed while on duty. Portnoy himself donated $20,000 to Penn State's annual IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, and he raised over $91,000 to help veterans with PTSD and mental health issues.       

In spite of all this, Portnoy and Barstool are both heavily criticized for the content on their website. Still, no amount of criticism has stopped the company from becoming an international sports media giant.     

Well, they say no publicity is bad publicity, and Barstool generated over $90 million in 2019. The company is valued at $450 million after Penn National bought 36% of the company in January 2020
