He made his career debut in 1978 with Wonder Island. His work was published in Weekly Shonen Jump with positive feedbacks. 

His breakthrough as a manga artist came in 1980 with Dr. Slump which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump until 1984. For his out-standing in the series, Toriyama won the Shogakukan Manga Award for best shonen or shojo manga. 

Following the end of Dr. Slump, Akira released one of the top twenty highest-grossing media franchises of all time, Dragon Ball. The manga became an instant hit, sold in over 40 countries and broadcasted in over 80 countries.

The manga’s tankobon volumes have sold over 160 million copies in Japan making it the second best-selling manga series in the history behind One Piece by Eiichiro Oda.

Besides its success in Japan, Dragon Ball amassed great international success in Asia, Europe, and the USA selling 250-300 million tankobon copies worldwide. 

Toriyama worked in the series from 1984 to 1995 asking everyone to let him end the manga. Daron Ball’s success led to five anime adaptations and animated movies, video games, and merchandise. 

The third anime adaptation titled Dragon Ball GT not based not Akira’s manga but he was still involved with the name and designing the main cast.
